Havanese Dog - Tips On Identifying A Havanese Dog
20/05/2011 by FeedCrazy.
The Havanese dog is a popular toy dog of Cuban descent with a unique combination of a personable charisma, elegance, and the fact it hardly sheds. You’ve probably seen video clips of this breed while playing or in dog shows - you’ll notice a “spring” its gait. This spring is due to the strong rear legs and motions of the breed, along with its shorter front legs. The Havanese dog, because of the lively manner in which it moves, is definitely playful, quite the vigilant pet, very smart, and highly trainable. Some owner love to accessorize or imbue their pets with a certain hair fashion - such as tassel-like cords; this you can do to your Havanese.
The foregoing are some of the more prominent characteristics of the Havanese that distinguish it from other toy dog breeds. Below are more detailed ways to single out this breed.
One. Despite being a small dog, it remains sturdy, and it’s not delicate-looking nor as fragile as some designer Chihuahuas. Despite it’s relatively small stature, this dog is going to survey a lot of activities - running around for hours, jumping over house fixtures, playing with kids. The coat of the Havanese, you’ll notice is silky and long, with wavy hair. Close to its rump is its tail. The coat, despite how hot it might look, actually serves to protect the dog from accumulated heat from staying under the sun, and from heat build ups in general.
Two. The Havanese, based on kennel club breeding standards, is expected to be between eight and one half inches and eleven and one half inches tall measured at the shoulders. Remember, it’s a bit shorter (in length) than its height. It shouldn’t be excessively bony.
Three. The Havanese also has a slight “grin” of mischievousness to it, and a playfulness that’s obvious. It has big brown eyes that are usually almond-shaped. Its ears of usually medium-length, and high up on the skull. On its rectangular muzzle is a square nose that’s black, solidly black.
Four. The double- coat is not like that of most dogs’. Unlike other breeds with double-coats, this breed has one that’s light in texture, with an outer coat that’s a bit heavier than the one underneath. This dog should not have a wiry coat, or one whose length is enough to cover the dog’s natural lines. The coating’s color can be varied, freckled, or parti-colored.
These are but the well-known and documented differences of the Havanese compared to other breeds; feel free to look up more detailed comparisons online. The goal is for the aforementioned characteristics be kept in mind when you visit a breeder to check his or her Havanese dogs for sale.

An Introduction To The Labrador Retriever
15/05/2011 by FeedCrazy.
Labrador retrievers continue to be the most popular breed in countries such as the United States, Great Britain and Canada, and for good reasons. For one thing, these dogs are exceptional family pets as a result of their gentle, devoted and friendly qualities that endear them to both humans and other pets in the household. For another, these dogs are widely known for their intelligence, adaptability to pretty much any situation and athleticism, qualities which are made use of in search-and-rescue, drug detection and also other police work as well as for civilian uses like guide dogs.
History of the Breed
Originally coming from Newfoundland in Canada, the very first Labradors worked next to fishermen by assisting to pull in the nets then grab the fish that escaped from the fishing lines. This was possible due to their water-resistant coat and webbed feet coupled with their natural athleticism.
As often is the case inside the canine community, breeders crossed Labs with other breeds, particularly setters, spaniels and also other retrievers. And so was developed the modern day Labrador retrievers as we all know them nowadays.
Right Owner for this Breed
The majority of dog experts point out that owners must choose a breed of dog that suits their desired qualities in the canine. For potential owners of Labs, keep the following points in mind.
If you’d like a dog with a happy, peaceful and trustworthy nature as well as a dog that flourishes on physical exercise, play and athletic activities, then a Labrador retriever will probably be for you. However if you don’t wish to deal with exuberant rowdiness, inborn chewing habits, and make provisions for lots of exercise, then the Labrador retriever is not the right dog for you.
Don’t forget that Labs are sporting dogs which require plenty of physical activities lest undesirable behavior like chewing and jumping on people express themselves. If you’re often away on business, this dog will need to have a companion in the house.
Physical Appearance
The Labrador retriever is actually a medium-sized dog and has an athletic build. Their coat is short, thick and repellent to water to some degree. These particular physical attributes help make the Labrador retriever a terrific dog for hunting waterfowl and upland game for many hours on end. That, when coupled with its steady, reliable and flexible temperament, truly makes it a much loved breed amongst sportsmen.
The Labrador’s face is characterized by a clean-cut head, strong jaws and warm and friendly eyes, all coming together to suggest an intelligent animal with great character. Colors for this particular breed of dog consist of blacks, yellows from light cream to fox-red, and chocolates from light to darker tones. Tan and brindle markings also are standard but they are usually cause for disqualification in dog shows, but not with their loving families.
The very best trait of the Labrador retriever is not so much in its beautiful physical appearance but in its beautiful soul. Labs are gentle dogs with little to no aggressive tendencies toward man and fellow pets. In fact, Labs are dogs with the intense wish to please other people so much so that these dogs are great for households with smaller kids. So, if you would like a great family pet, then a Labrador retriever is your perfect option.

Dog First Aid - Sunburn
12/05/2011 by FeedCrazy.
Sunburned? My dog? You must be joking! True, the dog is covered with a lot of fur but Fido and company can get sunburned too. Just as with humans, spending hours under the blazing sun would be dangerous to dogs too. Dogs, of course have the fur as protection but just as with the clothing of humans, the fur too would be an inadequate shield against the dangerous ultraviolet rays of the sun. Sunlight does have healthful benefits and of course dogs would love to be out in the sun. Summertime is a happy time for these animals that love to be in the sun. Unfortunately, a dog that stays too long in the sun would be miserable because of sunburn.
What are the signs that would tell you that the pet has sunburn? When the cute pink nose turns red so that you would think the dog had become Rudolf, the red nosed reindeer. Ears are more prone to drying up, cracking and curling because they are less covered with hair. After the burn, the affected skin will appear white and kind of leathery. These symptoms will be noticed if the dog’s sunburn is superficial. Deep partial thickness and full thickness sunburns are serious types of sunburn. Severely affected skin would have blisters and sores. Dogs with these types of sunburn need hospitalization. These serious types of sunburns commonly cause severe damage to the skin thus skin grafts may be necessary.
For minor or superficial types of sunburn, the dog can be treated at home. For ease of application of medication and for easy monitoring of the healing of the burned skin, it would be best to shave the hair on the affected area. Use iodine to clean the burned area and to ward off infection. Burn ointment is then applied to the burned area.
Aloe vera is an effective first aid treatment for sunburn. An aloe vera ointment can be used but the coolness of the fresh plant would be very soothing to the hot skin. Gel squeezed from a fresh aloe vera leaf is applied to the affected skin.
To speed up the healing process, the oil from a vitamin E capsule can be squeezed out and applied to the affected area. Vitamin is as well proven to reduce scarring. The pain and the itch caused by the sunburned skin will make the dog miserable. The discomfort of the pet will be lessened if baking soda and oatmeal products are added to the bath water.

Dealing With Epilepsy Dogs Often Have
11/05/2011 by FeedCrazy.
Dealing with epilepsy dogs often have is a disease that is characterized by recurring seizures. It is important to note that not all seizures are indicative of epilepsy. The disease is caused by abnormal brain function where electrical impulses malfunction and cause the well-known seizures. It is a disease that occurs in all breeds of dogs, and is thought to be genetic.
Epilepsy is a disease that can be divided into two types. The primary form of epilepsy is genetic. This form of epilepsy is passed down through the dogs parents. By looking at a dogs heredity you will often see other cases of the disease.
The other type of the disease is often caused by a lack of nutrients, or a toxin in the environment. Lead and other toxic substances can trigger the epileptic seizures, as can a lack of certain vitamins.
The primary symptoms of epilepsy are the seizures. There are many types of seizures. People familiar with epilepsy in humans will recognize these categories. There are the grand mal seizures. In the grand mal seizure the dog might collapse, lose consciousness and exhibit other extreme behaviors. This type of seizure is associated with the first form of epilepsy.
Seizures come in all degrees. There are some seizures which are very slight. The dog may appear to be shaking and or twitching. It may not appear to even be a seizure to many people.
For a person who owns a dog with epilepsy, there can be quite a few problems. But it is good to know that there are many ways to treat epilepsy. There are several medications which can be used to lessen the seizures. While the disease cannot be cured, it can be controlled. Medications such as Valium are used to limit the effects of the seizures.
If you happen to see your dog go into a seizure, it is important to remain calm. You should also try and remember what happened before the seizure. How the dog was acting is important in helping with the diagnosis.
Keeping watch over your dogs eating habits is very important. Besides what food they are eating, it is important to observe and see if there are any poisons or toxins in the area which they have access to.
Once the seizure has occurred, your veterinarian will conduct a series of tests. These tests will determine if your dog has epilepsy. These tests will range from determining the level of lead in your dogs blood, to taking advanced imaging tests of the dogs brain.
Making sure the dogs living space is free of pollutants is very important. In addition to this, once the dog as been put on medication the dog has to be watched. Many of the treatments have side effects that you must be aware of. Your vet will inform you about the specifics.
Many of the drugs that are used to treat epilepsy can cause damage to your dog if they are suddenly stopped. For this reason, it is advisable that if you decide to switch medications consult your veterinarian. They will usually suggest slowly lowering the dosage.
Even though a dog cannot be cured of epilepsy there are drugs and lifestyle changes that can make the dogs life more tolerable. The fact that it has a disease does not mean that its quality of life will be terrible. With medication and diligent observation many dogs with epilepsy live happy lives.

Hand Signals To Help Make Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Training Easy
11/05/2011 by FeedCrazy.
Successful cavalier king charles spaniel training is certainly not not unachievable. While experts are frequently, if not at all times, effective, there are tons of techniques that can help you train your beloved furry friend on your own. Apart from dog experts, you can learn these methods from numerous sites, breed discussion boards and groups, ebooks and other breed owners you know.
One popular training approach is the utilization of hand signals. Hand signals, if correctly applied, can provide results that would surely make you a happy and proud dog owner. Check out these hand signal tips for easy dog training:
Sit.
To teach your dog how to sit using hand signals, bend your arm upwards with your hand or fist beside your head. While carrying out the gesture, give the command “sit”. Applying this hand signal each time you command your pet to sit will enable him to associate the hand signal with the spoken command. Another version is to extend your arm toward the dog and then point your index finger down. This hand signal is seldom used though as this is easily confused with hand signal for “down”.
Down.
To begin training this command using hand signals, extend your arm in front of you, palm facing down. Gently move your hand towards the floor while saying the command “down”. Use this hand signal each time you give the command for him to associate the signal with the verbal command.
Stay.
This command is an essential part of cavalier king charles spaniel training too. When you are facing your dog, extend your arm in front of you with your palm facing your pet and your fingers pointing upward. If needed, move your hand towards him but do it gently. On the other hand, if your pet is beside or behind you, drop your arm to your side with your fingers pointing down while your hand is facing your pet. Do the hand signals while ordering your pet to “stay”.
Come.
Just like stay, the come command requires you to extend your arm in front of you. However this time, rather than moving it towards your pet, you have to move your arm across your body until it touches your opposite shoulder. Initially, your hand ought to move slowly towards your body and slowly increase the speed as the training progress. As your hand moves, give the command “come” and give him reward as soon as he comes near you.

My Dog Is Misbehaving
30/04/2011 by FeedCrazy.
My Dog is Misbehaving
If your dog is misbehaving in front of you, try scolding it properly. Tell it off that what it’s doing is wrong and try showing it the correct way to behave in that situation. If it does what it’s told, you should reward it accordingly. Remember, a dog that’s punished with fiery punches or rolled up newspapers might create a very angry dog later on.
Rewarding your pet dog is a keen way of showing it the proper way to not misbehave. When done correctly, it can internalize good habits and be more reluctant to do develop bad ones. You can reward your dog, but don’t overdo it to the point that you might spoil it.
Training sessions should be kept short. 15-20 minutes per training session is cool. There may be repeated training sessions in a day, for several days until your dog has fully learned the desired behavior. If it has not done so by then, you should change your approach entirely. Overriding the training period can leave your dog flustered, giving it more reason to misbehave
Building a relationship with your dog is a way to overcome its misbehaving attitude. Since we can’t understand dogs and vice-versa, we have to be extra careful and watch out for cues that may give a clue as to how they came to be this way. Remember, dogs remember things – and they remember everything you teach them, that is knowledge that they will internalize for the rest of their lives. If you taught a dog to be well behaved, chances are it’ll be well-behaved.
If your dog is driving you crazy with its misbehaving streak, fix it before it escalates into something drastic. It may have given you its puppy dog eyes when you first bought it, but it’s different when you’re actually raising it. Since there is a language barrier between you and your pet – it’s your job to make sure it understands what you’re saying.

Get Rid Of Behavior Problems Through These Labrador Training Tips
02/11/2010 by FeedCrazy.
While having a labrador can be fun and exciting, it is necessary for owners or future owners to recognize their duties in their dogs’ lives – that is to provide the top four components including material needs, correct grooming and care, socialization and right labrador training. These four components are vital in helping a dog grow up to become a fine dog with impressive manners. And how do you picture out a fine dog with remarkable manners? Naturally, the one without behavior issues and obeys several commands reliably.
Yes, training is one great way in avoiding or solving various behavior problems. Here are some tips how:
Training should be done everyday starting from day one.
Young minds are less complicated to shape considering that they have not yet developed undesirable habits that are difficult to break. The day your pet arrives home, train him to get accustomed to the new setting he is into. Gradually introduce him to everyday scenarios like children playing noisily, dashing cars, joggers and passersby, friends visiting and a lot more. Then introduce fundamental commands one by one while working on with house training. A 15-minute labrador training session everyday is highly recommended.
Be a responsible leader of the pack.
Dogs in the wild flourish in packs and they tend to obey anyone they see fit to become the leader of the pack. This is also true to domesticated canines, yet, their packs don’t only include dogs but humans as well. As owner, make it apparent to your pet that you are the leader of the pack and other human members of the pack are on top of him in the hierarchy thus he should obey them too.
Never use physical punishment.
Dogs never respond well to yelling, hitting or kicking. In fact, it’ll only aggravate the behavior instead of correct it. So regardless of how frustrating labrador training can get, bear in mind not to inflict pain to your pet.
Reward good behavior.
Let him know that you are pleased with what he did by giving him reward for every good behavior. Nothing motivates a dog better than yummy treats or squeaky toys.

Yorkies are perceptive dogs. Actually research has proven that they can learn commands quicker than a substantial number of other breeds. But, they can still be stubborn when it comes to potty-training. Using a crate will keep them confined so they can stay out of trouble.
Dog crates come in several different sizes, but you want to be certain you find one that is the right size for your Yorkie. You do not want one that’s so tiny that they cannot move in, and you do not want one that is too huge, or your Yorkie will urine in it. You want to find one that’s sufficient room for them to stroll around in.
You will want to put a comfortable blanket or doggie bed in their crate to keep them comfortable. Don’t put too much in there at first in the event your Yorkie has an accident in it.
Your Yorkie should stay in their crate in the night and when no one is at home. This keeps them from roaming the house readily and prevents them from having accidents in the house. Just do not forget to take them outside to go potty first thing in the morning or when you get home.
