Shrewsbury Town Tourism Highlights

Shrewsbury is a colourful town with a long distinguished history. First recorded in a Charter of 901, Shrewsbury developed as a market town helped by the natural defensive qualities of a big meander in the Stream Severn.

Shrewsbury is the administrative centre for both Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough and Shropshire County ( which doesn’t include the Telford and Wrekin borough, which is now a unitary authority ). Shrewsbury is one of England’s best medieval market towns, set amid the superb Shropshire country close to the Welsh Borders, with some of the finest saved Tudor and Jacobean streetscapes in Britain .

The town has over six hundred listed buildings including the previous Benedictine Abbey and the sandstone Castle. It was built on a hill and the stream 7 going loops around it. It was a clear place to build a castle in anarchic times, as the loop in the brook and location above the encircling area made it straightforward to protect. Shrewsbury Castle was built to defend it from invaders and since that time it’s always flourished.

These days it could also boast being flourishing cultural centre with a new theatre at its heart. But it’s usually had museums, great design, art, film, theatre, food, music, literature and sculpture in it’s veins, and mush are these diversions enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Shrewsbury is also respected as a conventional independent college. It was founded in 1552 and has Charles Darwin among its famous ‘old boys ‘. Shrewsbury has been home to some great corporations and was a manufacturing centre for both steam tractors, and more lately Rolls Royce Perkins [1] engines. Shrewsbury is actually quite a smaller than average, medieval market town in that part of western Britain known as the Welsh Marches.

Though most renowned for being the birthplace of Charles Darwin, some of it’s characters of old who were connected with the genuine Shrewsbury Abbey, have been recreated in the fictional medieval sleuth - Brother Cadfael. The Abbey remains a visitor attraction and visitors are welcome to tour the abbey but it is requested that you contact the abbey’s main office during business hours to line up the tour.

The town is widely known for its connection to the English civil war and a famous battle which was fought simply to the north of the town. Visitors can walk a footpath which crosses the location of the battle so many years gone. The trail leads to Battleground church where visitors can see 5 newly installed panels describing the 5 main players in the Battle of Shrewsbury. Additionally a commissioned display picturing the Battle of Shrewsbury is on show in the vestry.

Shrewsbury has many modern buildings including an enormous new shopping centre off the High st. Nonetheless much that’s old still remains. Many old street names will surprise you, Gullet Passage and Grope Lane are just a couple of the strange street names you can find. Many corners of the town, back alleys and "shuts", have changed tiny from the times of Elizabeth I, and some of these streets possess small hotels, and well kept and very friendly [2] Shrewsbury Bed and Breakfast establishments.

Travellers like to explore the old fashioned, narrow passage-ways over that the leaning higher stories of wood framed homes seem to be about to meet.
