Many households tend to suffer from high energy bills during winter. It is during the Winter season that the most energy consuming household appliances are switched on and are kept running for most of the day. However, people often forget to switch these machines off, wasting valuable electricity.
The majority of homes are able to accomodate cavity wall or loft insulation. With the new [1] insulation grants, home owners will find cavity wall insulation and loft insulation more affordable than ever. Cavity wall insulation can be installed in houses built between 1930 and 1995, and loft insulation can installed in almost every home. Many houses built after this time will already be insulated.
To be eligible for [2] cavity wall insulation the walls of the household should have a gap of 50mm. These cavities will be injected with an insulating material which will prevent valuable heat from escaping. Material used will either by mineral fibre wool or vermiculite. DIY kits are available from most major hardware stores. However it is recommended that a professional tends to the task. The insulation grant doesn’t just cover the material, but also the labour too - which means it can often by far cheaper to get a professional in rather than doing it yourself.
Loft insulation is also extremely effective at keeping heat inside your home. This helps to further reduce household energy bills by around £179 annually. Loft insulation is generally a quick and clean process with the entire task taking a period of 3 days including the registration and quotation to completing the installation. Up to 60kg of carbon dioxide can be saved each year from entering the atmosphere. The environmental benefits are vast and reduction in bills and consumption will improve tremendously. Many home owners who’ve had insulation installed would highly recommend it to anyone else.
[3] Insulation grants are given to all homeowners. The grant has varying factors which may affect the type of grant you receive. Insulation grants range from 40%-100% of the cost of insulation, depending on your circumstances. The cost of the grant is covered by the energy saved. Insulation grants are backed by the UK government as part of a wider plan to reduce carbon emissions.
